The Nutcracker ballet was created by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, who also created the ballet Swan Lake, and first performed in December 1892. The Nutcracker was loosely based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King about a girl who becomes a friend with a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and battles an evil Mouse King. Since 1892 The Nutcracker ballet has been adapted in many forms as well as in movies and books, but is still considered the most popular Christmas ballet production over 100 years later.
